The Medical Sciences Department is the latest addition to academics at American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS), with a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) and an ambitious plan to add further medical and health-related majors in the near future. The MLS program was established in 2018 and will graduate its first cohort of undergraduate students in Spring 2022.
The MLS degree program is one of the most popular academic offerings at AUIS, with a growing number of students, especially women, declaring it as a major. Utilizing a US-style curriculum, state-of-the-art equipment, and Western-educated faculty members, the MLS program at AUIS aims to provide high-quality instruction to students who will become future leaders in the healthcare sector across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The department also aims to become a hub of excellence in research and scholarship for students and faculty members.
MLS AT AUIS
MLS courses at AUIS are taught by well-respected professors and laboratory instructors who have completed their degrees and clinical training at leading universities and hospitals in the US and Europe. Faculty members continually engage in medical research and provide students with opportunities to participate in studies while pursuing their MLS degrees.
Our courses cover a variety of theoretical and practical topics ranging from introductory sciences to advanced medical and clinical courses and labs. Courses take place primarily in modern, tech-enabled classrooms and lecture halls, while laboratory instruction is carried out in five well-equipped laboratories in the Science Building located on AUIS’s campus.
Our curriculum focuses on critical-thinking and soft-skills development coupled with clinical experience. Unlike other MLS programs in the region, the AUIS MLS program offers a unique curriculum that was developed to match the global standard of medical laboratory education. Students receive extensive clinical training in their final year to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and practical experience necessary to succeed after graduation. Upon completion of their MLS degree, students are prepared to pursue post-graduate degrees in the US and Europe, or gain further practical experience in clinical settings.
In addition to the MLS program, students participate in a range of extra-curricular activities including community service events, public awareness campaigns, and student clubs. One of AUIS’s most active student-led clubs is the MLS-run Code Blue Club, which presents seminars and community outreach activities focusing on health-related topics.
An exciting partnership with High Quality Hospitals (HQH) provides MLS students at AUIS with access to one of Sulaimani’s most advanced hospitals. Anwar Sheikha Medical City serves as the Medical Sciences department’s teaching hospital where students will complete their year of clinical experience. The Medical Sciences department welcomes partnerships and collaborations with national and international organizations and individuals who believe in our mission and share our goals of providing world-class education and scholarship.
