This new university opened its doors in 2007 with the determination to provide an alternative to the “lecture-memorize-repeat” model of education so prevalent elsewhere in Iraq and the Middle East. Forty-five students from across Iraq were admitted to the first undergraduate class; simultaneously, the University launched an MBA program for professional students to study business and leadership at the graduate level.
In 2007, American University of Iraq, Sulaimani welcomed its inaugural class of ten students. Fifteen years later, 1,400 students pursue undergraduate degrees in 22 undergraduate programs. The University also serves a broader learning community by offering graduate degrees in its Master of Business Administration program, and by offering English language proficiency through its Academic Preparatory Program.

Campus
When it was first established, AUIS was located on a smaller campus in the heart of the city and had one administrative building and a dozen movable classrooms. Today, the campus houses among the best university facilities in Iraq.
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees of the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani is a self-perpetuating body that establishes policies for, and has oversight of, the University and its management and operations.
Life in Sulaimani
