Academic Preparatory Program (APP)

The Academic Preparatory Program (APP) prepares non-native English speaking high school graduates to enter the AUIS undergraduate program by teaching them academic English, critical thinking skills, and study habits. All applicants to American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) must take an English placement test upon admission. Scores on these exams, based on the English requirements, determine placement. About 90 percent of students will require English training before joining the academic program; they receive this training in APP. The program strengthens students' English language skills and provides them with the student success training and intellectual tools needed not only to do well but to thrive in the academic program.

 

Continuous Education and Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance measures at AUIS work to ensure high levels of academic standards and institutional performance, and that quality is assured and enhanced on a regular basis. Our efforts are monitored by the Ministry’s Quality Assurance Committee to regulate and standardize ways to promote academic quality throughout Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. To support its mission of bringing American-style, liberal arts higher education to Iraq, AUIS has set American regional accreditation as a key institutional goal. The Accreditation Steering Committee, in pursuit of this goal, will coordinate all committees, oversee all record keeping, and produce all reports related to accreditation.

Core Program

The AUIS Core Program is the common curriculum in the Liberal Arts that all AUIS students take.

The strong Core Program at AUIS makes it unique among Iraqi universities; it gives students in professional programs a strong background in English and the humanities, and makes sure that social science and English majors have acquired basic scientific, mathematical and computer skills.

The AUIS Core Program is the common curriculum in the Liberal Arts that all AUIS students take. Students take courses in the Core Program throughout their undergraduate career, but the majority of such courses are taken in the first few semesters. The first goal of the Core Program is to provide a foundation of knowledge and reasoning to help students as they proceed with their major studies, their careers and the rest of their lives. Another goal is to promote broad learning and teaching that crosses the borders between disciplines, so that students with a degree from AUIS possess many of the strengths of the educated mind. Liberal education at AUIS requires all students to take foundational courses in the humanities, the social sciences and math and natural sciences. The Core Program at AUIS is committed to the notion of building students’ curiosity and skills, and to finding ways to build co­curricular programs.

All AUIS students take a four course Civilization sequence, studying developments in politics, culture, science and the arts from antiquity to the present. All students also take three Math courses (usually College Algebra, Statistics, and Pre­-Calculus) and three English courses (Argument, Writing, and Research). The final set of mandatory courses all students at AUIS take are Life Sciences and Physical Sciences, and one course in Computer Science.In addition to these thirteen required courses, students are required to take one elective course in each of the three major fields – Social Sciences, Humanities, and Math and Natural Sciences.

AUIS Library

The library maintains a core collection of English, Arabic, and Kurdish books, periodicals, audio-visual materials, and online electronic databases are also available. Moreover, comprehensive interlibrary loan services, and computer and printing services. Reading and writing centers are located in the library too.

Registration and Records Office

The Registration and Records Office, also known as the Registrar's Office, supports all enrolled students (including students in the Academic Preparatory Program, undergraduate, and graduate programs) and faculty members through the accurate maintenance of academic records, consistent enforcement of academic policies, efficient operation of all advising and registration systems, and production of reports, analysis, and research. The Registration and Records Office leverages thorough knowledge of academic policies and best practices to ensure that AUIS academic departments and programs function with integrity.
