American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) is the first non-governmental, not-for-profit, American-style university in Iraq. Founded in 2007 and operated for the public benefit, it is also the first non-governmental university in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region to be accredited by both the federal Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government. 
The University serves as a cultural bridge for students from diverse backgrounds and viewpoints, including Syrian refugees, internally displaced Iraqis, students from Afghanistan, and members of other vulnerable minority groups. Together with faculty and staff from over 20 different countries, our institution has forged a unique community dedicated to advancing its mission. 
AUIS prepares students for careers in emerging fields that will benefit them and their families, the Kurdistan Region, and all of Iraq. Our graduates leave us with what they need to succeed as individuals and to contribute to society, evidenced by 85% of recent alumni telling us they are currently employed or in graduate school.
