Overview

The Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department is committed to teaching students the quantitative, scientific, and rational reasoning skills that are integral to a liberal arts education. These skills provide a foundation for further study in various scientific and technological fields. Courses compose a significant part of the AUIS core curriculum, and the Department works closely with degree-granting departments to address the quantitative and scientific needs of their students.

GOALS

  • Provide all AUIS students with an education in mathematics and sciences which will serve as part of a foundation for long-life learning of science and math.

  • Build students confidence in their abilities to understand and apply mathematics.
  • Provide new interdisciplinary programs, and increase the availability of math and science courses for AUIS students.
  • Integrate more technology into each and every math and science course taught at AUIS.

Minor in Mathematics

The Mathematics Minor aims at providing students with a wide background in Mathematics and training them on sharp critical thinking skills while giving them a perspective of the general field of Mathematics. To enroll in the Math Minor, students will need to have taken Calculus II and pass this course with a minimum of grade of C To complete a minor in Mathematics students are required to take 5 courses:

Mathematics and Natural Sciences Department Chair
Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS). Our department plays a crucial role in shaping the academic journey of every student, regardless of their chosen major. We are proud to offer a comprehensive range of science and mathematics courses that are integral to the development of essential skills and knowledge across all disciplines.

The aim of our courses extends far beyond delivering theoretical knowledge. Our focus is on fostering critical thinking, nurturing a deep understanding of scientific and mathematical concepts, and honing students' ability to analyze and interpret data. These skills are indispensable in today’s rapidly evolving world, where problem-solving and analytical thinking are critical to success in any field.

Within the department, we also offer a Minor in Mathematics to further enhance the employability of our graduates. This minor equips students with a firm theoretical foundation and analytical mindset, complementing their major studies. It is particularly valuable for those who aspire to pursue postgraduate studies abroad, as it prepares them with the mathematical rigor needed for advanced academic success.

Additionally, our Mathematics and Science Center is a cornerstone of support for students in the department. Here, peer tutors offer guidance to fellow students who seek extra help with their Math and Science courses. Whether students need clarification on difficult concepts or additional practice, the Center is a welcoming space for academic support and growth.

Whether you are pursuing a career in pharmacy, engineering, business, social sciences, or the humanities, the analytical foundation built through our programs will empower you to apply your knowledge effectively in real-world situations. Our goal is to equip graduates with the intellectual tools and practical skills they need to thrive, both in their professions and as informed, critical thinkers in their everyday lives.

At the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, we are committed to fostering an environment of curiosity, inquiry, and innovation. We continuously strive to provide an enriching academic experience that prepares our students for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Thank you for your interest in our department. We look forward to working with you and supporting your academic and professional growth.
