Overview

The College of Dentistry at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) proudly offers a comprehensive 10-semester, 5-year Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery (BDS) program that stands at the forefront of dental education. This program is meticulously crafted to incorporate the latest innovations and cutting-edge technologies within the dental field. The curriculum reflects the commitment of skilled professionals in dentistry to provide students with the most up-to-date and relevant knowledge. At AUIS, students benefit from an immersive educational experience facilitated by state-of-the-art equipment in all dental clinics and labs. These facilities showcase a diverse array of technologies sourced from various branches of dentistry, ensuring that students are well-versed in the tools and techniques shaping the future of dental practice.

The academic staff comprises both local and international experts, each specializing in different branches of dentistry and other related scientific fields. Possessing the highest academic expertise, these instructors are dedicated to guiding students through every step of their educational and practical journey, fostering an environment of learning and excellence. The College's mission is to enhance the quality of dental practice in the Kurdistan region of Iraq and Iraq as a whole. It seeks to advance research locally, addressing both strengths and weaknesses in dentistry within our region. The College will confer a Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery (BDS), with the first cohort having begun in the spring of 2023.

 

Curriculum and Course Descriptions

Our curriculum is designed to meet the highest standards in dental education, encompassing a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for a successful career in dentistry. The curriculum includes the following key areas:

  • Basic Sciences: Foundation courses in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, etc…
  • Preclinical Dentistry: Courses focusing on dental materials, tooth morphology, and introductory clinical skills.
  • Clinical Dentistry: Advanced courses covering all aspects of dental practice, including operative dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, oral surgery, pedodontics, diagnostics, oral medicine, and orthodontics.
  • Research and Ethics: Courses designed to instill the importance of ethical practice and encourage involvement in dental research.
     

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the 5-year Dentistry program, graduates will:

  • Possess the ability to diagnose and effectively manage common dental issues encountered in general dental practice.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in dental procedures while maintaining a high level of professionalism and ethical conduct.
  • Be equipped to select the most suitable treatment options for dental problems, considering the patient's medical and social circumstances.
  • Excel in professional communication with patients and colleagues.
  • Actively engage in dental research and education, contributing to the promotion of oral health and prevention of oral diseases.
  • Showcase their capacity to work as collaborative team members within the oral health care community.
  • Interpret investigative procedures for dental issues and manage and prevent procedure- related complications effectively (Dentistry).

The College of Dentistry at AUIS is comprised of a single comprehensive program: the Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery (BDS). This program offers a comprehensive and innovative approach to dental education. The meticulously designed curriculum blends theoretical knowledge with practical skills. To further enhance the program, new technologies such as digital dentistry, 3D printing, VR/AR simulations, and AI systems are being integrated. We proudly welcome you to the College of Dentistry at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS). The quality of teaching in our college is upheld by our highly-educated and experienced national and international academic staff. These professionals have earned their degrees and received training from top dentistry schools in the U.S., U.K., and beyond.

 

Our focus is on providing practical and clinical training to prepare well-qualified dentists for the future. This preparation occurs in our laboratories and dental clinics equipped with advanced state-of-the-art equipment and overseen by highly experienced supervisors. Currently, we offer a bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery (BDS) spanning ten semesters, encompassing major subjects and the AUIS core program. Our curriculum, crafted by experienced professionals in the dentistry field, is designed to meet the highest standards in dental education.
