Dr. Hartnell is an archaeologist with two decades of experience working in Australia and the Middle East. He completed his thesis on Persepolis, the capital of ancient Persia, before coming to AUIS. His research interests include the local politics and economic systems of ancient Mesopotamian and Persian Empires. His most recent work on the Sasanian Empire (224 - 651 CE) is published in the Journal of Ancient History.
He is also the founding director of AUIS's Center of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage (CACHE).
