Associate Professor of Pathology/Hematology, (MHS) Department Chair
Department of Medical & Health Sciences (MHS)

Welcome to the Department of Medical & Health Sciences at American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS). Our department was established in 2018, and despite its young age, it has evolved to be among the most popular departments at the University.

Our main mission is to provide a high-quality education based on U.S. standards to prepare skilled, knowledgeable, and equipped medical professionals who can serve the region and beyond.

Our mission is greatly supported by highly-educated faculty members who earned their degrees and completed training in top schools in the U.S., U.K., and beyond. We also utilize cutting-edge laboratories to provide a rich learning environment that focuses on hands-on experience through practical training and instruction.

We currently offer a bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) and have an ambitious plan to extend our offerings in the future to include more medical programs. Our curriculum has been reviewed and enriched by partners through the Texas International Education Consortium (TIEC), which includes more than 30 public and private universities based in the U.S. state of Texas.

We place great emphasis on clinical training to prepare our students for life after graduation. In the MLS program, our students are expected to complete two semesters of intensive clinical training in a hospital setting and under the supervisor of experienced clinicians. These clinical rotations offer great opportunities for our senior students to be familiar with hospital settings and gain valuable experience.

Our department also invests in medical research, with an active effort to foster research and scholarship in education. Our faculty members conduct research in key areas of the medical sciences such as pathology, hematology, infectious diseases, pharmacology, genetics, molecular biology, and public health. In the past year, our faculty members have published several original articles in world class journals with high impact factors; participated in several international and national conferences; and earned a medical patent for innovative cancer treatment.

We are committed to providing outstanding medical education through integrating the three main pillars of modern medical education: teaching, clinical training, and research.

We invite you to learn more about our department and its offerings.

Overview

The Social Sciences Department offers an International Studies major which integrates political, economic, geographic, historical, and anthropological approaches to the examination of the world.

Students explore contemporary and historical political and cultural systems as well as their interaction in a global context, and apply multidisciplinary theoretical approaches to local, national, and international issues. Students learn to think critically, write persuasively, ask questions, and consider problems from multiple perspectives. Our majors prepare for a wide range of careers: diplomacy, international business, non- governmental organizations, local and national government, as well as in teaching and journalism. Students also pursue graduate degrees in fields such as law, business, economics, political science, and history.

Dean's Message

Robert Perrins

Professor/ Provost / Chair
Department of Social Sciences and Law

The Department of Social Sciences and Law aims to bridge the gap between Europe and Asia, so that students experience a truly global education. The Social Sciences faculty offers two undergraduate degrees - International Studies (IS) and International Relations (IR). IS delivers a broad education in history, geography, economics, and politics; and students engage critical issues facing Iraq and the KRI with a global perspective. This major offers the most flexibility in the department, so that students can pursue a minor in Business, Law, Journalism, or even Climate Change or AI.
In contrast, an IR degree offers a comprehensive view of issues related to political economy, comparative politics, and international relations with an introduction to international law. This degree combines theoretical training with practical knowledge, so that students become competent researchers who can add local perspectives to debates about global issues.
Both degrees offer study abroad opportunities in Europe and Asia, as well as virtual exchanges with some of the top universities in Europe such as Cambridge and Charles University in Prague. Our alumni have experienced significant success pursuing graduate degrees and finding jobs in media, government, business, and prominent NGOs.
If this sounds like you, the Admissions team can put you in touch with one of our faculty members to learn more about the different programs in the department.

The English Department offers students the opportunity to explore – and participate in – the rich tradition of the written word in English.

All students learn to approach texts and ideas critically, to consider them thoughtfully, and to write about them clearly. The enhanced fluency English Majors and Minors gain will prepare them to compete in the domestic and international job markets for careers in teaching, journalism, government, marketing, communications, publishing, and business as well as for graduate study.

Students who choose the English-Journalism Major will acquire dexterity in traditional and emerging media. All good writers begin as good readers: student-journalists will steep themselves in literature so that they may begin to intuitively understand the standards to which they aspire. Our program emphasizes individual field-work as a primary vehicle, allowing students to cultivate their own interests as they learn all the necessary skills. The English-Journalism Major balances theory with practice.
