About the Library
The Moulakis Library plays a crucial role in connecting students, faculty, and scholars at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS). It is committed to providing high-quality information and resources to support the research and learning needs of the AUIS community. By integrating information literacy into the curriculum, the library actively contributes to the academic goals of both students and faculty. The library houses a core collection of books in English, Arabic, and Kurdish, alongside periodicals, audio-visual materials, and access to online electronic databases. The library hosts reading, writing, and Testing centers to support academic development. The Library is Named in honor of Dr. Athanasios Moulakis, the library commemorates his contributions as President Emeritus and a member of the AUIS Board of Trustees from 2010 to 2013. Dr. Moulakis passed away in 2015, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence.

Some of the Library projects and events:
The Artful Mind project is a community project led by the AUIS Moulakis Library for female orphans in the Sulaimaniyah orphanage. The Artful Mind Community project aims to empower orphans by providing them with unique opportunities to pursue their dreams through education, awareness, and art. The project, supported by the AUIS community, unfolded in multiple sessions, each designed to provide a unique and enriching experience for the orphans. Most of the sessions took place at the Moulakis Library on the AUIS campus. The sessions were English lectures, reading and discussions, art activities, puzzling, teaching them to make jewelry, and meditation sessions.

This event provides students with the opportunity to engage with faculty outside of the classroom setting. Discussions focus on books or works authored by AUIS faculty, encouraging students to explore diverse topics and view their instructors as role models for their own academic and professional futures.

Both faculty, staff, and students actively participated, making these sessions rich with insight and collaborative learning.
First Session:
Moulakis Library in collaboration with the AUIS book club managed a book session for the students in fall 2023 semester. This project is an ongoing project that the library is planning to continue in the following semesters, each semester with different topics and choosing different books. The topic of this project was “How Can We Understand Human Life and Development by Reading Kafka? About the book written by Kafka “The Metamorphosis”. The project was presented by Ms. Goshan Mohammed and the student book club leader Mohammed Salih. At the end of the project, we received positive feedback from our students and faculty members who participated, and they confirmed that it was a good opportunity to hear different perspectives and opinions about the book and see how different readers understood the main concept and how it was related to the topic of the project. Netherlands Ambassador Janet Alberda Visits AUIS to Explore Academic Collaboration and Student Opportunities
On Tuesday, September 24, AUIS had the honor of welcoming the Netherlands Ambassador in Baghdad, Ms. Janet Alberda, to our campus. Ambassador Alberda was accompanied by the Interim Consul General, Mr. Roelof Van Ees. During their visit, they met with AUIS President, Dr. Bilal Wahab, to discuss potential avenues for academic collaboration between AUIS and Dutch institutions.
AUIS Hosts Lecture by Japanese Ambassador Futoshi Matsumoto
On Tuesday, September 17th, 2024, the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) hosted a special lecture by Mr. Futoshi Matsumoto, the Japanese Ambassador to Iraq. The event, exclusively organized for AUIS faculty and staff, focused on the topic, "Japan's Modernization and Its Lessons for the Future of Iraq and Kurdistan."
AUIS Hosted Panel Discussion with Ambassador Stephen Hitchen
On Wednesday, September 18th, 2024, the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) hosted a dynamic panel discussion with Ambassador Stephen Hitchen from the British Consulate General in Erbil titled, “Youth, Democracy, and Opportunities: A Discussion with Ambassador Stephen Hitchen and Chevening Scholarship Highlights.” The event focused on critical issues such as youth engagement in democracy, upcoming elections, policy priorities, and the Chevening Scholarship program.
AUIS Open House: A Glimpse into the Future for Aspiring Students
On Monday, September 9, 2024, the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) hosted its highly anticipated Open House, welcoming recent high school graduates and prospective students to explore the university’s academic offerings and campus life. The event, held at 3:00 PM on the AUIS campus, provided an excellent opportunity for attendees to meet with faculty, staff, and current students.
