The Engineering program at AUIS is modeled after the world’s best engineering and science programs offered at top universities. With the help of a few generous donors and a strong partnership with University of Colorado at Boulder, AUIS offers one of the leading engineering programs in Iraq, which is designed to meet the American accreditation standards for engineering. The state-of-the-art engineering department was established with the generous help of ShaMaran Petroleum Corp. and Lundin for Africa - a canadian NGO. The NGO’s donation of $750,000.00 was significant in setting up an endowment for the Lundin Chair in the engineering department. Meanwhile, the generous ShaMaran grant of about $5 million helped AUIS in building and designing the engineering department classrooms, laboratories, faculty and curriculum.
In 2014, a few of the top engineering students from AUIS completed an intensive internship program with Korek Engineering Systems. AUIS engineering students follow one of the top engineering programs in Iraq, with a very practical hands-on approach. The KSE employees were “quite impressed” with the interns for being quick learners, according to AUIS's former professor Norman Armendariz, “they are now considering building a long term relationship with AUIS to provide a regular internship program for the University’s engineering students.”
AUIS engineering labs offer some of the finest resources and facilities in the country. It was a particularly proud moment for the department this year when they printed their first prototype using a 3D printer. Students are able to create 3D models and prototypes during their engineering course and are offered hands-on experience.
