AUIS Law Students Shine at International Investor-State Mediation Competition
From August 19 to 24, 2024, four law students from the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS)—Amro Salam, Mandana Saman, Sahand Sarkawt, and Zainab Hussain—made history as the first-ever team from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to participate in the prestigious International Investor-State Mediation Competition (IIMC) in Sri Lanka. Their journey to the competition began with a victory at the National Competition held in the Kurdistan Region in February 2024, which qualified them for this global stage.
AUIS Hosts First-Ever English Public Speaking Competition, Celebrating Winners with a Special Visit to Erbil
On April 25th AUIS launched the English Public Speaking Competition organized in partnership with the Ministry of Education. The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil and the Consulate of Italy were also partners of the event. 56 participants took place in this first-ever competition delivering a a speech prepared for the competition's theme of "Dynamic Earth". Deaf Studies and Kurdish Sign Language Offered for the First Time at AUIS
Most deaf people in Kurdistan-Iraq are isolated socially, economically, and politically because they are deprived of their human right of language. Kurdish Sign Language (KuSL) is not routinely used in the public schools, and education for deaf children is available only in special schools and only until the sixth grade. Many deaf children, especially those outside major urban areas, communicate with their families in very limited “home sign,” which restricts them from communicating with anyone beyond their family members.
