Munirah Eskander Akbar joined AUIS as a Jan Warner Visiting Scholar in the spring semester of 2022. She holds an M.A. in Modern Middle East Studies, a B.A. in International Studies, a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, and a minor in Gender Studies.
She has previously worked in research positions in the Netherlands and the United Arab Emirates, including as a Research Assistant at the American University of Sharjah and as a Research Trainee at Leiden University in the fields of digital humanities, medieval Islamic literature, and gender relations within family structures. Most recently, Munirah has been working as a Research Fellow with Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML), a transnational feminist solidarity network that promotes gender justice.
Munirah has formerly taught “ENG102: Critical Reading and Writing” and “Social Justice in Theory and Practice” at AUIS. Currently re-teaching ENG102 and “History of the Middle East,” she also serves as a member of the recently founded Institutional Effectiveness project to measure students’ critical thinking mindset and reasoning skills at AUIS.
