AUIS Welcomes Consul General of India to Launch ITEC Program, Explore AI Education and Cultural Exchange

Sulaimani, Kurdistan Region – May 21, 2026 – American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) yesterday welcomed Brujesh Kumar for an official visit to the university campus. The Consul General met with AUIS Provost Robert John Perrins to announce the availability of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program for the AUIS community and to discuss broader academic and cultural collaboration.

The visit, which took place on May 20, began with a meeting between Consul General Kumar and Dr. Perrins. During the meeting, the Consul General introduced the ITEC program, a certified, government-backed initiative that offers courses in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other emerging fields. He emphasized that the program is open to all AUIS staff, faculty, and students, with courses designed for participants who meet English-language requirements. Upon successful completion, participants receive internationally recognized certificates. The Consul General noted that the ITEC program currently involves partner institutions from 150 countries, making it a truly global opportunity.

Following the meeting, Consul General Kumar toured the Moulakis Library at AUIS, where he visited the Indian Corner — a dedicated collection of books and resources showcasing India’s rich history, literature, and culture.

As part of the cultural exchange, the Consul General also observed organized yoga sessions for the AUIS community, reflecting India’s broader commitment to promoting wellness and holistic practices alongside educational partnerships.

“We are honored to welcome Consul General Kumar to AUIS and to learn more about the ITEC program,” said Dr. Perrins. “This initiative offers an incredible opportunity for our faculty, staff, and students to earn certificates in cutting-edge fields such as AI, backed by the Government of India. We are also grateful for the Consul General’s visit to the Indian Corner in our Moulakis Library, which symbolizes the enduring power of knowledge and cultural exchange.”

Consul General Kumar added: “The ITEC program is India’s flagship capacity-building initiative, and I am delighted to introduce it to the AUIS community. Faculty, staff, and students are all encouraged to apply. Our goal is to make high-quality, certified education more accessible. Seeing the Indian Corner in the Moulakis Library and the community’s enthusiasm for yoga reinforces that our partnership with AUIS is built on shared values of learning and well-being.”
