AUIS Faculty Publishes in Informal Logic on the Concept of “Argumentative Civility”

The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) is proud to highlight the recent publication of Professor Hareim Hassan in the peer-reviewed journal Informal Logic (Vol. 45, No. 3, 2025). His article, titled “Civility: One or Many? Introducing ‘Argumentative Civility’”, advances an important discussion on the role of civility within political and argumentative discourse.

In this study, Professor Hassan develops the concept of argumentative civility as a framework that addresses both the enabling and constraining functions of civility in public debate. The article critically examines who defines civility, how such definitions shape inclusion or exclusion in discourse, and whether civility can coexist with strong forms of dissent.

This article situates civility as a plural and context-sensitive practice. This interdisciplinary approach broadens current understandings of how argumentative norms can foster dialogue, mutual recognition, and socio-political transformation across cultures.
