Jamalieh Haley joined AUIS faculty in Fall 2017 to teach composition, technical writing, linguistics, and creative writing. She previously taught at Portland State University in the linguistics department, Mount Hood Community College and Portland Community College in the humanities departments, Ashford University in the English department, and as a guest lecturer at Southern Maine University and Cornish College of the Arts for poetry and playwriting, respectively.

Jamalieh holds an M.F.A. in Poetry from Vermont College of Fine Art, and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Portland State University. Her research interests lie in Discourse Analysis, register use, and Sociolinguistics, as well as contemporary poetry and conceptual metaphor. Her research in the latter field particularly explores how metaphor can change reality and a person’s perception of the realm of possibility. Creatively, her work will categorize these realms and develop deep and imaginative worlds based on them. Her research in the former field looks particularly at vulnerable demographics such as refugees, women, or minorities in the U.S. and public or legal discourse with or about these demographics.

She is the author of Strange Tarot (Poor Claudia) and her poetry and essays have appeared in Everyday Genius, Plinth, Interrupture, Sink Review, Sixth Finch, and elsewhere. Her research on augmented reality games and semiotics in language learning is published by Springer in Language Learning ‘in the wild’: Using Conversation Analysis to Discover the Complex Ecology of Learning-in-Action.
