Profile

Dr. Hareim Hadi Hassan is a Kurdish-Canadian Assistant Professor of Political Argumentation at the American University of Iraq–Sulaimani (AUIS). He has several years of university teaching experience in Canada and the Kurdistan Region, including at the University of Windsor, Simon Fraser University, AUIS, Komar University of Science and Technology, and the University of Sulaimani. His research interests include critical thinking, argumentation theory, political argumentation, political extremism, argumentative civility, and political philosophy. His research focuses particularly on argumentative understandings of extremism and civility in political discourse and draws on both contemporary argumentation theory and Islamic traditions. His publications have appeared in Q1 journals including Informal Logic and Topoi. He is a recipient of the Qatar Debate Fellowship (2025–2027) for his project “Argumentative Civility in the Turkish-Kurdish Peace Process.” He has also translated books in moral philosophy and critical thinking into Kurdish and regularly contributes to Kurdish media and public scholarship on critical thinking, dialogue, and civic discourse.
Research interests: argumentation theory; political argumentation; political extremism; argumentative civility; civic education and political philosophy.
