Position Description:
The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the AI and Robotics Engineering program. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced educator and researcher to join a growing department in an academic environment that values teaching, research, and innovation. AUIS seeks candidates who are committed to high-quality undergraduate education and are enthusiastic about advancing AI and Robotics within the region.
Responsibilities:
We are seeking an AI and Robotics Engineering Expert with a strong background in LLMs, digital signal processing, robotics, and computer version. The ideal candidate will have experience working with LLMs in an on-premise environment, ensuring data privacy and security while optimizing model performance. Key responsibilities include data preparation, model training, evaluation, and deploying models on our in-house infrastructure.
The appointed faculty member will be expected to teach a wide range of courses such as the following (and their prerequisites):
- Digital Signal Processing
- Advanced Robotics
- AI Applications
- Computer Vision
- ML
- LLMs
- Natural Language Processing
In addition to teaching, the candidate will contribute to curriculum development, mentor students, and engage in scholarly research. Faculty members at AUIS are expected to participate in departmental and university service, including advising students, collaborating with colleagues, and contributing to university initiatives.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate exhibits the following characteristics:
- Master’s degree or PhD in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics or a closely related field from a recognized university.
- Strong expertise in AI, ML, LLMs, NLP, and robotics.
- Experience teaching courses focused on AI, ML, LLM, NLP, robotics, computer vision, digital signal processing, and/or their prerequisites.
- Ability to design modern, student-centered courses using hands-on labs, coding assignments, flipped-classroom activities, and project-based learning.
- Practical experience with Python, PyTorch or TensorFlow, Google Colab, Hugging Face, and modern AI development tools.
- Experience with large language models, including prompt engineering, fine-tuning, evaluation, and practical deployment.
- Experience contributing to AI Lab activities, including applied AI projects, student supervision, and research development.
- Experience working on Kurdish language AI, including dataset preparation, benchmarking, and fine-tuning models such as Gemini for Kurdish NLP applications.
- Ability to supervise student projects in AI, machine learning, robotics, computer vision, NLP, and embedded intelligent systems.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to high-quality teaching, student engagement, and integrating current AI research and industry trends into the classroom.
- Proficiency in teaching in English is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Industry experience in AI applications, machine learning, data science, and/or robotics.
- Experience teaching the additional courses: Mechatronics, Measurements Laboratory (Instrumentation), Introduction to Robotics, and Robotic Manipulation and Mobility.
