How to Calculate Your GPA

Please review the information below to understand how American universities, including AUIS, calculate each semester's GPA.

  • Grades are assigned a numerical value (grade points) on the following scale:
A  4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B- 3.0
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
C- 1.7
D+ 1.3
D 1.0
No other grades and symbols (i.e., W, I) are used in the calculation of the GPA.
  • Grades are given a weight by multiplying the number of grade points by the number of credits. For instance, an A in a four credit course is worth more than an A in a 1 credit course.
  • Your semester GPA is calculated based on the following equation:
Sum of all weighted grade points (grade points multiplied by credits) / sum of credits

So:

You recieve an A (4.0) in a 3 credit class, a B (3.0) in a 3 credit class and a D in a 4 credit class.

(4.0 x 3.0) = 12

(3.0 x 3) = 9

(1.0 x 4) = 4

12 + 9 + 4 = 25 total points; 10 total credits

GPA = 25/10 = 2.5

  • Calculating your CUMULATIVE GPA:

In addition to a semester GPA, AUIS calculates a cumulative - or total - grade point average for each AUIS student.

AUIS does not calculate this by averaging your semester GPAs. Rather, we total all your weighted grade points and divide by total credits.In addition to a semester GPA, AUIS calculates a cumulative - or total - grade point average for each AUIS student.

In order to do this, you use the following equation:

total grade points (add up all grade points) / total credits

So:

You have been an AUIS student for two semesters. The first semester you had the following grades:

(3 grade points, 3 credits) = 9 weighted grade points; (4 grade points, 3 credits) = 12 weighted grade points; (1 grade point, 3 credits) = 3 weighted grade points;

First semester total weighted grade points = 9+12+3= 24 weighted grade points and 9 total credits

Second semester you earn:

(2 grade points, 3 credits) = 6 weighted grade points; (3 grade points, 3 credits) = 9 weighted grade points; (2 grade point, 3 credits) = 6 weighted grade points;

First semester total weighted grade points = 6+9+6= 21 weighted grade points and 9 total credits

To calculate your cumulative GPA you add grade points (24 + 21 = 45) and divide by total credits (45/18) =  2.5

Before calculating your GPA please take a note of the following:

1.       You can calculate your term GPA by entering only one semester’s grades.

2.       You can calculate your Cumulative GPA by entering all the earned grades including the failed courses.

3.       If you re-took a course please enter only the heights grade.

4.       Labs are only 1 credit, but the course credit may vary.

You should not enter approved transfer courses, for the grades will not affect the cumulative GPA.
