Korea–Kurdistan Dialogue to Explore Development and Scholarship Opportunities

On May 6, 2025, American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS), through the AUIS Institute for Korean Studies in the Middle East, hosted a high-level academic conference titled “Korea–Kurdistan Dialogue: Development and Scholarship Opportunities”. The event attracted more than 150 participants—including students, faculty, and senior administrators—who gathered to engage in meaningful dialogue around Korea’s model of economic development and its implications for the Kurdistan Region.
The conference featured a keynote by Mr. Seungcheol Lim, Consul General of Korea in Erbil, who offered a compelling overview of Korea’s economic transformation and research-driven growth. His address set the stage for discussions about the potential for academic and cultural cooperation between Korea and Iraqi Kurdistan. Dr. Robert Perrins, AUIS Vice President for Academic Affairs, outlined the growing role of the AUIS Institute for Korean Studies in fostering engagement and student mobility. Meanwhile, Dr. Lynn Rose, Professor of Humanities and Korean Studies, presented an academic overview of Korean Studies and how AUIS integrates global perspectives into its curriculum.
The conference offered students direct insights into scholarship opportunities in South Korea and broader academic pathways facilitated by the AUIS Korean Studies initiative. Additionally, representatives introduced the First Essay Competition for University Students on Economic Development of the Kurdistan Region, offering AUIS students a chance to showcase their ideas and win prizes for their academic work.
Following the sessions, guests were invited to enjoy traditional Korean cuisine, adding a cultural dimension to the academic event. This conference is a part of AUIS’s strategic goal to expand global partnerships and enhance opportunities for its students.
