AUIS Student Wins Top Honor at MEOS GEO 2025 in Bahrain

The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) proudly celebrates Rezan Fawzi Abdulaziz, a senior Mechanical Engineering student, for her remarkable achievement at the Young Professionals and Students (YPS) Program during MEOS GEO 2025, one of the Middle East’s most prestigious engineering and geoscience conferences held in Bahrain.
The four-day program gathered outstanding young engineers and geoscientists from around the world to develop their research, teamwork, and presentation skills through intensive training sessions and field experiences. Participants visited the Bahrain National Museum and a local shipbuilding and maintenance company, gaining hands-on exposure to the country’s industrial and cultural landscape.
In the culminating Technical Challenge, Rezan’s team took on the theme “Turning Waste into Energy”, competing against other talented teams from across the region. Their project, EcoBump: Waste to Watts, introduced an innovative concept that repurposes old tire rubber and plastic waste into energy-generating speed bumps. Each time a vehicle passes, the bump converts mechanical pressure into electrical energy—an inventive step toward sustainable urban infrastructure.
The project impressed the judges with its creativity, technical rigor, and environmental value, earning first place in its category and achieving the highest overall score among all participating teams.
This achievement not only highlights Rezan’s exceptional talent and leadership but also exemplifies the AUIS spirit of innovation, critical thinking, and real-world application. Through its American-style education, AUIS empowers students to approach complex challenges with creativity and purpose, equipping them with the skills to make meaningful contributions locally and globally.
