Professor Dr. Ahmed Salih Mohammed, a faculty member in the Department of Engineering at American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS), published new research examining the environmental impacts associated with the 2026 USA–Israel–Iran conflict.

The study was published in Environmental Progress & Sustainable Energy, a Wiley journal published in association with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, with an Impact Factor of 2.6.

At the core of the research is an examination of how pollutants generated during conflict can move through the environment and affect air, soil, and groundwater. The study identifies air pollution as the most immediate concern, with impacts that can extend beyond the areas directly affected by conflict. It also highlights groundwater contamination as a significant long-term environmental risk.

The research further proposes an integrated approach to monitoring and assessing environmental risks in conflict-affected regions, providing a framework for better understanding and managing the environmental consequences of conflict.

The publication reflects the continued contribution of AUIS faculty to research addressing timely regional and global challenges and demonstrates the University’s commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and scholarship with real-world relevance.
