The Academic Preparatory Program of the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani is accepting applications for the position of English Instructor for the 2023-2024 academic year, which will begin October 14, 2024. We are seeking seasoned ESL/EFL teachers with specific experience teaching academic prep classes in post-secondary settings. The University is located in the Kurdish region in northern Iraq with excellent security, welcoming and hospitable residents, and eager and capable students.
The preparatory program is an intensive program that prepares entry-level university students with academic English, critical thinking, and study skills. Program levels range from beginner to upper intermediate and class materials and assessments are designed to address students’ needs.
APP faculty are required to produce meaningful lesson plans and assessments that follow our APP Curriculum, teach these lessons to their assigned students for 10 weeks per term (3 terms per year), and grade assessments to determine their student’s progress over the semester. Responsibilities include up to 25 contact hours each week teaching academic reading, writing, and grammar and up to an additional 20 hours of classroom preparation.
Additional responsibilities include:
- Developing materials for the assigned courses
- Develop meaningful assessments that align with the curriculum
- Student advising and office hours
- Supporting in new student orientation and engagement programs
- Participating in service activities and faculty governance
- Maintaining professional development and scholarship
Minimal Qualifications:
- Native English speaker ( USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and South Africa)
- A master’s degree is required. A master’s degree in TESOL, Linguistics, Education or English is preferred, OR any MA degree with a CELTA, or TESOL
- At least 2 years of teaching experience at the postsecondary level
- Demonstrated strong commitment to teaching
- Evidence of outstanding teaching skills, including the ability to teach diverse populations and students for whom English is not a native language
- Have experience working with AI in classroom settings
OR
- Near Native ESL instructor
- A master’s degree is required: A master’s degree in TESOL, Linguistics, Education, or English is preferred from a Western university.
- At least 2 years’ experience in teaching in a university or tertiary institution
- Demonstrate strong English communication skills. IELTS 7+ or TOEFL of 100+ may be requested
- Have experience working with AI in classroom settings.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is competitive, and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Faculty are required to only work for 30 teaching weeks per year, with two additional working weeks required for preparation and review.
