AUIS President Meets with Sulaimani Governor to Strengthen Community Service and Champion Cultural and Economic Growth
Sulaimani, Iraq – January 27, 2025 – The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) President, Dr. Bilal A. Wahab met with the , Dr. Haval Abubakir, Governor of Sulaimani to discuss the University’s expanding role in community service, workforce development, and cultural advancement in the city. The discussions focused on fostering stronger ties with local businesses and aligning AUIS’s resources to address critical training needs for the workforce while furthering Sulaimani’s reputation as a center of culture, creativity, and economic innovation.
The meeting comes at a pivotal time as Sulaimani continues to lead as a production hub, accounting for 36% of Iraq’s local production of goods. Additionally, the city is aspiring for global recognition by being listed as a UNESCO City of Culture—a goal strongly supported by AUIS and its leadership.
AUIS’s Role in Supporting Culture and Education
The President highlighted AUIS’s significant contributions to the city’s cultural fabric through its centers for literature, culture, and translation. These centers have played a key role in preserving and promoting Kurdish and Iraqi heritage, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and encouraging intellectual exploration.
