English Language Teaching Positions

The Professional Development Institute (PDI) of American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) is seeking an ESL instructor for its English Language programs. PDI provides English language instruction to non-traditional students. The majority of students are adults enrolled in general ESL classes in the evenings. However, PDI also offers test preparation courses (TOEFL, IELTS), as well as classes specifically tailored to the needs of clients, i.e., Conversational English, Academic Writing, Business English.
 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Planning, preparing, and delivering lessons effectively
  • Meeting the curriculum objectives for each course
  • Developing and using supplemental materials to enhance learning
  • Preparing and administering weekly assessments
  • Maintaining attendance and grading records
  • Attending staff meetings and workshops
  • Carrying out various other tasks assigned by department head, such as placement testing
  • Work independently and also as a member of a small team of instructors
     

Details:

  • Classroom hours: approximately 20 hours per week; additional work may be available as the opportunity arises.
  • Working hours: 6 evenings a week (from Sunday to Thursday); daytime classes may also be offered.
  • Holidays: Fridays and Saturdays, all university holidays, one week off every 7 weeks in between the terms, and a 2-week break over Christmas/New Year’s
  • Class Size: 15-20 students
  • Contract Type:1 year with potential for renewal
  • Employment visa will be provided by the university if needed
     

Minimal Qualifications:

  • Native English speaker
  • A bachelor’s degree
  • 2 years’ English language teaching experience

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MA/M.Ed. in English/Applied Linguistics/TEFL/TESOL
  • CELTA, DELTA, or Trinity Certificate, or equivalent teaching certification (must comprise a minimum of 120 hours coursework and 20 hours classroom teaching practice)
  • Previous Middle East experience or experience working in emergent nations
  • Experience teaching specialized English courses, such as TOEFL/ IELTS preparation, business English, medical English
