Iraq Economic Review: The Economy in an Era of Climate Change

Can Iraq’s economy adapt to the accelerating pressures of climate change? Water scarcity resulting from the combined impacts of climate change, government neglect, and the war-related deterioration of infrastructure is rapidly becoming a major threat to the country’s key economic sectors. Years of drought and heatwaves are already disrupting agricultural production as well as energy infrastructure. The Iraqi government has taken some steps to address environmental degradation and climate change, such as ratifying the Paris Agreement. However, much more needs to be done to ensure that the country's economy can adapt to the short-term challenges of water scarcity and the long-term realities of climate change. The September 2023 edition of the Iraq Economic Review (IER) discusses both the challenges and opportunities facing the country in adapting to these emerging climate realities.
