On Thursday, April 17, 2018, IRIS hosted a workshop by Assistant Professor Aisha Ahmad from the University of Toronto on social science research design and methodology. Professor Ahmad is also the Co-Director of the Islam and Global Affairs Initiative and a Senior Researcher of the Global Justice Lab at the Munk School of Global Affairs. AUIS Students, professors, and staff from various disciplines attended the workshop and participated in the group activities.
Professor Ahmad explained the process of writing a theory paper, covering how to generate a research question, a hypothesis, an empirical test, and an evaluation of the hypothesis against other alternative explanations. Using real life examples, AUIS students practiced identifying dependent and independent variables, as well as the scope condition.
The workshop offered key insights that will support AUIS students to design sound research projects in future.
