On September 20-22, 2024, the Institute of Regional and International Studies (IRIS) at the American University of Iraq-Sulaimani (AUIS) launched the 2024 class of the Iraq Leadership Fellows by hosting the first training workshop of the year in Sulaymaniyah.
Funded by the DT Institute, the workshop, titled “Leadership with Purpose,” provided comprehensive leadership training to 32 fellows from 18 provinces across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The fellows were divided into two tracks: the Political Candidate Track and the Social Activist Track.
In line with the orientation of AUIS and DT Institute toward addressing environmental challenges in Iraq, this year, ILF also incorporated the climate and environmental accountability as a core component of its 2024 curriculum. The sessions highlighted the urgent need for climate action, particularly as Iraq faces severe environmental challenges such as water scarcity and desertification.
Participants in both tracks engaged in three intensive days of training, guided by the ILF capacity-building team. They explored Adaptive Leadership principles and how they can apply them to tackle the country’s most pressing issues.
Looking ahead, a second workshop is already in progress, continuing this vital dialogue and building on the knowledge gained in the initial session.
