Just Environmental Transition

Partnering with the Arab Reform Initiative (ARI), the Institute of Regional and International Studies (IRIS) has launched the Just Environmental Transition project. Supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), this initiative aims to advance research on environmental transition in Iraq. As part of a broader regional effort involving Tunisia, Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco, and Algeria, we aim to ensure that Iraq’s context and priorities are integrated into the Middle Eastern discourse. With inequality emerging as a pressing global issue, this project is particularly important as it highlights the critical need for an equitable approach to sustainability—not only addressing the transition from a technical and governance perspective but also ensuring that the process is inclusive and grounded in social justice. We believe Iraq’s environmental transition is not just about moving from oil to renewables; it’s about reimagining how energy, water, and food systems will evolve over the next decade and ensuring that these changes are fair to all.

Through collaborations with civil society organizations, researchers, and policymakers, we will arrange a series of roundtables and meetings to ensure everyone’s voice is heard and to lay the groundwork for policies that balance Iraq’s environmental, social, and economic realities.
