On May 17, 2023, the Institute of Regional and International Studies (IRIS) hosted a roundtable featuring Ahmed Tabaqchali, Senior Fellow at IRIS, and Mohammed Hussein, Researcher at Iraq Oil Report. The roundtable was entitled “The KRG-Baghdad Oil Deal: Political & Economic Implications" and was moderated by Zainab Mera, Senior Manager at IRIS.

The discussion focused on the recent deal between the KRG and Baghdad that outlines the parameters around oil exportation following the recent arbitration ruling that effectively curtailed the KRG's independent oil sales. The speakers explained the technical and political factors that will shape the implementation of the agreement, in addition to the implications for revenue sharing and budget distribution between Baghdad and Erbil. They also addressed the potential impact of the agreement on the lives and livelihoods of ordinary citizens in Iraqi Kurdistan, who are facing uncertainty about the short-term and long-term impact of the deal.
