Poor water and environmental management constitute key drivers for Iraq’s environmental problems including water scarcity. This poor management is often attributed to factors such as corruption and lack of technical capacity. Therefore, bringing together young civil society and political leaders to understand the details and mechanisms of water and environmental management in Iraq between different governmental institutions is key to mitigating this problem. To this end, IRIS and the International Republican Institute (IRI) have come together to implement Youth for Accountability in Environmental Governance (YAEG) program, the first capacity building program in Iraq to focus on the inner workings of Iraq’s environmental governance. The discussions in this program will aim to develop accountability mechanisms to improve performance of the relevant institutions in regard to water and environmental management in Iraq. The program will also engage civil and governmental stakeholders and policy makers to deliver its outcomes.

IRIS calls qualified young Iraqi leaders with experience in environmental activism and governance to participate in YAEG. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Iraq’s water management and contribute to its enhancement.
