"I extend a warm invitation to all program participants to join the COP 29 simulation organized by the Ministry of Environment in Baghdad," stated Dr. Yousif Moayyad, Director of the Climate Change Department at the Ministry. Dr. Moayyad addressed a group of Iraqi youth leaders in environmental accountability during a session at the second workshop of the Accountability in Environmental Governance (YAEG) program, held on March 9-10, 2024, in Sulaymaniyah. The opening session, moderated by Shivan Fazil, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Regional and International Studies (IRIS), provided a platform for Dr. Yousif to share insights about the participation of the Iraqi delegation in COP 28 and the role of the Ministry of Environment in engaging youth and civil society in environmental governance in Iraq.

Additionally, the workshop featured contributions from Dr. Sameh Al-Muqdadi, Water and Climate Expert at the Green Charter Foundation in Germany. Dr. Al-Muqdadi engaged participants in discussions on the complexities of water resources management in Iraq, offering guidance on navigating various stakeholders involved in addressing water scarcity and pollution. He also delivered sessions on climate governance and environmental accountability. Throughout the two days, participants engaged in simulation exercises and presented case studies relevant to environmental governance.

As the workshop drew to a close, IRIS concluded the current cohort of the YAEG program, which brought together 19 young environmental leaders from 11 Iraqi cities, including the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).
