Before teaching at AUIS, Dr. Abbas taught research writing, postcolonial studies, World and British literature as well as literary theory in several US universities, including Old Dominion University, the University of Houston, Downtown, and Purdue University. 

 
Akeel also worked for several years as a journalist covering Iraq and the Middle East, appearing as a guest analyst on a number of Arabic-language TV programs. Specializing in cultural studies, Akeel's research interests include modernity, democratization, the politics of identity and human rights.
 
Akeel is interested in questions related to democratization, marginalization and the construction of identity, particularly in the context of the Middle East. He took up these issues in published pieces, academic and journalistic, broadcast interviews, and public talks. He has done many trainings and workshops about media and human rights as tools of democratization.
