On April 25, In a moderated discussion, authors Choman Hardi and Essmat Sophie read from their recent novels and discussed the role of fiction when it comes to re-writing the highly contested history of both the past and the present. Hardi and Sophie undertake the difficult endeavor of combining history, historiography, and fiction in intricately woven literary works of art. Both novels do this by combining real-world extra-textual events and relating them to their readers through the fictional characters living through them. In doing so, these novels deal with the highly gendered aspects of both a private Kurdish identity and public political struggle for freedom.
