On May 13, 2022, Dr. Choman Hardi participated in a panel discussion titled ‘Gender Justice and the Global Backlash’ in London School of Economics and Political Science. The other panelists were Ms. Hannah Bond, Prof. Bina D’Costa, Dr. Fiifi Edu-Afful, and Dr. Angelika Rettberg. The discussion was facilitated by Prof. Christine Chinkin, the former Director of the LSE Centre for Women, Peace and Security and a Global Law Professor at the University of Michigan. The panelists discussed the systematic and global backlash against human rights and women’s rights, including the rolling back of some sexual and reproductive rights and the threats and defamations campaigns targeting activists. The panelists also discussed the necessity of collaboration between academics, activists, and practitioners to resist the backlash. This was part of the second convention of the Gender, Justice and Security Hub which if funded by the UK Research and Innovation’s Global Challenges Research Fund.
Image description: There are two photos, both showing two women on a stage. One woman, with dark curly hair and wearing a red jacket, sits behind a raised desk on the left; the other woman, with light straight hair and wearing a collared shirt and grey cardigan, sits behind a lower desk, on the right. A large projection screen is to the women’s right. In both photos, the woman in the red jacket is speaking to the audience; in one photo, we see the backs of the audience member’s heads in the first five rows. The other photo shows the same scene without the audience, and the logo LSE, in white font against a red square background, is visible on the higher desk.
