On April 12, 2022, CGDS Research Fellow Dr. Twana A. Hassan participated in a radio program about the cultural roots of violence against women in Kurdistan. DGK Radio hosted the program. Dr. Hassan presented some of the findings of the masculinity study conducted by CGDS, especially those related to the cultural dimensions and forces of violence against women. He explained how the Kurdish value system reinforces a toxic form of masculinity leading to men's domination of women. He also mentioned the new waves of promising changes in different corners of the communities and how Kurdish communities can better embrace gender equality. The five year research project on Masculinity is funded by the UK Research and Innovation's Global Challenges Research Fund, and is part of the Gender, Justice and Security hub, in partnership with LSE.
