On February 21, 2022, Manara Magazine published Part One of the three-part series, “‘With Education You Can Face Every Struggle’: Gendered Higher Education in Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan.” The introduction to the series begins as follows: “In patriarchal communities, women’s dependency on men can lead to their being trapped in unhappy marriages and social settings. Education is a tool of empowerment for women, and those who nourish patriarchal systems view girls’ and women’s education with suspicion.” This first part of the series, titled “Living in Darkness,” was co-authored by Dr. Lynn Rose, CGDS Director of Disability Studies, and Dr. Choman Hardi, CGDS Founder and Director.
