CGDS partnered with the Embassy of Canada to Iraq to organize a three day comics workshop at the American University of Iraq- Sulaimani. Mr. Shirwan Can, the founder of Karge Comics Studio, facilitated the workshops, in which students worked together to produce stories and illustrate them.
On November 16th, 2019, CGDS had its first all day comic book workshop for AUIS students, led by Shirwan Can. He guided the students on how to both write and illustrate comic books. The main theme of the comic book was portraying gender inequality; the idea was inspired by the “16 Days of Activism”. The comic book was composed of four stories created by four illustrators and four writers.
The all day workshop was followed by one implementation session and one follow up session. In the implementation session Dr. Choman Hardi, Director of CGDS, discussed the concept of gender and gender equality. The session was for the purpose of inspiring the students to be able to apply the concepts in their comic books. On the 25th of November, 2019, the comic book was published and given out during the launch of the 16 Days of Activism.
