On Thursday, August 1st, the Center for Gender and Development Studies team held a full-day workshop on gender and media for 12 employees of KirkukNow, an independent electronic news website. This event was part of the Gender Studies workshop series, funded by the CGDS European Union grant for gender education in the MENA Region. The workshops are in line with our mandate to share knowledge and promote gender sensitive practises in the community.
This training workshop was tailored for professionals in journalism, and included vocabulary of gender studies as well as some introductory theories of feminism and gendered representations in the media. It built on the gender-sensitive media policy adopted by KirkukNow in consultation with CGDS. A dozen participants completed the training and received certificates.
