Zaid Al-Ali

Zaid Al-Ali is Senior Programme Manager on Constitution Building at International IDEA.  He graduated from King's College London, University of Paris (Sorbonne), and Harvard Law School.  He started practicing commercial litigation and international arbitration law in 1999.   He has provided legal advice on constitutional drafting processes in countries including Iraq (including in 2005 and in 2019), Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Sudan, Yemen and others, and has been support efforts to negotiate peace settlements in countries such as Yemen and Libya.  In 2022, he led an effort to evaluate the performance of Iraq’s 2005 Constitution since it entered into force.  He has taught law at Sciences-Po (Paris), Princeton University and the Central European University.  He is the author of The Struggle for Iraq's Future (Yale, 2014) and Arab Constitutionalism (Cambridge, 2021).
