AUIS proudly announced the winners of the 8th annual Essay Games Non-fiction Writing Contest at the AUIS Awards last month. In addition to receiving a certificate at the bi-annual AUIS Awards ceremony, winners received cash prizes: $100 for the best essay from a First Year / Sophomore and $200 for the best essay from a Junior / Senior.
First Year/Sophomore Category:
Yalda Al-Ani - " Betwixt and Between"
Mohammed Mustafa Imran Haider - "A Son of Earth"
Junior/Senior Category:
Tara Burhan Mohammed - "Nawal El Saadawi’s “In Camera”
The contest is a tradition going back eight years and began when Eric B. Brown, long-time friend of AUIS and current trustee, donated an honorarium back to the University and asked that the funds go to reward good student writing. Essays are judged on originality and clarity of thought, with winners selected by an anonymous panel of AUIS faculty and staff members. Finalists this year included essays examining the traditional role of women in Kurdish society, race relations in America as presented in poetry, and the status of Islam as a "religion of peace".
"At AUIS, we value critical thinking, respectful debate, arguing from the facts, and professional communication in English, and the Essay Games give us a chance to practice all of those," according to Geoffrey Gresk, Dean of Students.
