Members of the AUIS student-sponsored Council of Unity club held a cook-off fundraiser on campus on September 12, 2018, kicking off a campaign to provide meal donations for needy members of the wider Sulaimani community.
Club members sold plates of biryani, desserts, and other dishes in the AUIS cafeteria to raise money to buy, prepare, and distribute 3,000 meals to refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the area in commemoration of the Ashura holiday.
“Humanity is above all principles,” said club member Mohammed Tayib. “We, from different backgrounds, gathered for the sake of helping people who are in need...this gathering is a sign of unity, this message states that no matter what your background is, humanity is more than enough to be united.”
The Unity Council hosts numerous events and activities throughout the year, including the annual spring picnic, to bring together students from different backgrounds, build bridges, and encourage greater social cohesion on and off campus.
