American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) was again ranked top among universities in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq by the National University Ranking (NUR), Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Aram Mohammad Qadir announced in a press conference on January 9, 2020.
AUIS has been consistently ranked a top university in the Region since annual rankings were first announced in 2011.
NUR ranks private and public universities in the Region according to criteria which include graduate employment, faculty qualifications, student evaluations, library and academic resources, international and national partnerships, and quality control. Each of the Region’s universities are placed into one of several ranking groups based on the institution’s overall score.
“AUIS is proud to be recognized once again as a leading institution of higher education in the Region,” said University President Bruce Walker Ferguson. “Our University was established over a decade ago with the mission to provide the best education to future leaders in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and we remain committed to doing so.”
AUIS is the first non-governmental, not-for-profit, American-style university in Iraq. Founded in 2007 and operated for the public benefit, it is also the first non-governmental university in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region to be accredited by both the Federal Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government. It is the only certified member in Iraq of the Association of American International Colleges and Universities.
