SULAIMANI, August 3, 2018 - American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) today announced the opening of a generous new scholarship from Numerus Group, an Iraqi-owned and Dubai-based investment company, for undergraduate students at the University.
The Numerus Group was founded and is run by the Shanshal family. The Numerus Group Scholarship will provide much needed financial support to new and existing AUIS students. Applications are open for the 2018-2019 academic year. This highly-competitive scholarship will be awarded based on need and merit, and will cover tuition, fees, housing and books.
Speaking on the importance of education, Numerus Group Director, Yassien Shanshal, said: “Nelson Mandela, a great leader and a great human being, said that education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world.”
“We cannot agree more with this statement,” Shanshal continued. “We firmly believe that education is the key to peace, stability and prosperity, not only in Iraq but in our region in general. We are, therefore, very pleased to offer our support to institutions like AUIS that endeavor to better educate the youth of Iraq and better prepare them for the challenges of the future.”
Today’s announcement comes as Iraq continues efforts to strengthen its economy in light of an ongoing financial crisis and as families look to financial aid to fund university studies.
“Support for scholarship from the private sector is key to enabling AUIS to educate Iraq’s most vulnerable populations -- IDPs, minorities and all those affected by violence. Without such support we would not be able to bring these students to campus,” said AUIS President Bruce Walker Ferguson, JD.
“An AUIS education is key to real development and reform in Iraq and Iraqi Kurdistan as it trains students to think critically and enables them to find jobs and be leaders in the public and private sector.” Ferguson added. “The success of that model is demonstrated no better than in our own alumni, 80 percent of whom are employed or pursuing graduate studies.”
Interested candidates can apply through the application forms below. The deadline for applications is August 19, 2018.
