Awin Taib, Mechanical Engineering, Class of 2019

Currently, I am pursuing my master’s degree in controls, systems, and robotics at Drexel University in the United States. I believe a good education is a prerequisite to a successful career. The liberal arts education at AUIS has expanded my knowledge and deepened my skill sets, and this has given me a strong base to go further in my career. With the curriculum that AUIS offers, I was able to start my master’s right away without needing to take additional classes. Apart from that, the diversity and cultural environment at AUIS taught me to be more adaptive in different environments. AUIS does prepare you for a practical and professional future.

Bnar Salahalddin, Civil Engineering, Class of 2022

Bnar has worked with multiple private and public companies in the Sulaimani Region of Kurdistan. One of his most successful jobs was working as the Marketing Manager for Bina App. Bina App is a digital platform that offers a unique proposition for the construction industry in Iraq. Bina App enables people looking for work and construction companies looking for workers to connect directly. Customers can find professional service providers based on others' reviews as well as a marketplace for construction materials. Bina App is available in four cities across Kurdistan.

Karzok Nasralddin, Civil Engineering, Class of 2022

Karzok's dream is to become a Structural Engineer, and is currently studying for his master’s degree at the University of Sheffield in Structural Engineering. Sheffield is a top university and the second-best university for Structural Engineering in the United Kingdom. “Studying at AUIS has opened many doors for me.”

Nasir Mohammed Tariq, Civil Engineering, Class of 2022

Nasir is currently undertaking a master’s course in Civil Engineering at Liverpool John Moores University. He has always had a passion for engineering-related topics, which led him to choose Civil Engineering as his undergraduate major at AUIS. “Studying at American University has given me a chance to further my education in the UK and broaden my horizons," he said. He is most interested in  mechanics and design, such as concrete and steel design. “I have wanted to be a builder ever since I was a little kid playing with construction toys,” he added.

Sardam Ali, Energy Engineering, Class of 2022

Sardam graduated with the highest cummulative GPA in the Engineering Department and was a very hardworking student. Sardam is now an M.Sc. candidate in Engineering Mathematics at the University of Bristol, which is a top research university. At AUIS, he was interested in scientific computing, numerical analysis, and mathematical and data modeling. This led Sardam to a master’s degree, which combines Mathematics, Engineering, and Programming.

Sawen Faraidun, Mechanical Engineering

Deciding to major in the Mechanical Engineering program at AUIS was one of the best decisions that I have ever made in my life. Mechanical Engineering is a very broad field with a wide variety of opportunities. Throughout my two-and-a-half-year career as a mechanical engineer, I have had many duties and responsibilities, such as preparing and revising mechanical bills of quantity, tendering documents for different projects, mechanical design and coordination (MEP) drawing by AutoCAD or Revit Program for HVAC, piping, plumbing, firefighting, and liquid propane gas (LPG), sanitary, and medical gas systems. Furthermore, I managed to become a part of the Lafarge Holcim group’s family as a maintenance mechanical engineer. From my general professional career point of view, I believe there should be a road map on the important skills that a mechanical engineer should have in order to be successful. Among the most important skills are knowledge of engineering basics, problem-solving skills, and being analytical and creative in order to complete your daily tasks. Besides technical skills, soft skills are required in advance of effective presentations and meetings, communicating among different groups, and being able to document your work properly. As an engineer, you need to craft the way to success in more than a technique while having the ability to adapt to different roles.

Zhalyan Sardar, Civil Engineeering

Zhalyan graduated with a cumulative GPA of 3.32. Her passion for her classes, concrete structure design specifically, led her to her new journey at the American University of Beirut (AUB). She is now doing her master’s at the Maroun Semaan Faculty of Engineering and Agriculture (MSFEA), majoring in Structural Engineering, with a minor in Geotechnical Engineering. She was able to finish her bachelor's degree on a full scholarship, and she is now doing her masters with a scholarship at AUB. Along with Engineering, Zhalyan had a passion for mathematics, which helped her tremendously during her time at AUIS, where she also worked as a Math and Science Tutor.

Zhehat Abid Ibrahim, Energy Engineering, Class of 2019

Choosing the right path to success is one of the most critical decisions one can make. I chose the AUIS path, and it did lead me to success! My experience at AUIS was unique, and it allowed me to explore and learn new things both on personal and professional levels. The environment at AUIS encouraged me to find my passion and select my study area accordingly. The various extra-curricular activities that the university provided built confidence and leadership skills in me. Shortly after my graduation, I had multiple options to begin my career as I was lucky to have opportunities to work in some of the top international energy companies in the region. All the knowledge that I gained from different courses that I studied at AUIS translated into practical lessons in the field. AUIS helped me grow as a professional who can take on any challenge I face! And that’s exactly what I am doing in my current job. I am working as a supervisor (Company Man) at one of the largest international oil and gas companies in the region. Today, if I am in a favorable position, it’s because of what I learnt from AUIS. AUIS does not only hand you a diploma, but it prepares you for the professional world in the best ways possible. I am proud to be an AUIS-er.
