May 14, 2017 - The American University of Iraq, Sulaimani organized the second annual Spaghetti Bridge competition between seven universities in Kurdistan, in collaboration with the University of Sulaimani and View Pioneer.
The participating universities consisted of AUIS, The University of Sulaimani, Soran University, Koya University, Ishik University Erbil, Sulaimani Polytechnic University and Komar University. Each university was allowed three teams, with a maximum of three members on each. A total of 59 engineering students participated to compete. The competition was held at the conference hall where AUIS hosted the other six universities, and outside guests.
The Spaghetti Bridge Competition aims to assess students on bridges built using unconventional material like spaghetti, which could withstand the biggest load. The bridges had to follow a set of rules previously determined by a judging panel. For an unbiased decision, the panel was made up of representatives from four of the participating universities, along with a representative from View Pioneer, one of the competition’s partners. The rules and restrictions were set based on the material that could be used to build the bridge, and the dimensions of the bridges. Violations of the rules would result in penalties, affecting the chances of winning.
All the participants received certificates and $50 for competing. The winning teams were from Koya University, University of Sulaimani, Soran University, and another team from the University of Sulaimani, who placed first, second, third and fourth respectively. Winning teams received smartphones, certificates and monetary rewards.
