Engineering Laboratory Assistant

The American University of Iraq-Sulaimani (AUIS) seeks immediate applications for a full-time position of Engineering Laboratory Instructor / Assistant, based on a combination of degree level and applicable experience.

B.S. - Bachelors of Science, or M.S. Master of Science in Engineering or Applied Science.

Manufacturing, Mechanical, Materials Science, Chemical, Civil, Electrical Engineering or Applied Science, Physics, Physical Science, Chemistry or Chemical Sciences.

  • Laboratory Assistant:

B.S.- Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering Technology or Applied Science

Physics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Mathematics, Engineering Management, Production and/or Business Management.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for supporting the engineering laboratory administration of engineering faculty, adjunct faculty, lecturers, lab engineers, technicians and teaching assistants.

  • Provide laboratory instruction and / or support, as required per engineering administration and / or faculty approval by assisting professors with lab experiment design / selection, lab reports and grading, if deemed qualified, for the specific engineering lab sessions or modules required.

  • Responsible for maintaining the engineering lab inventory system and equipment documentation, i.e., warranties, instruction manuals, lab manuals, lab reports, engineering drawings in an organized manner under the direction of the lab manager in electronic and/or hard copy form.

  • Responsible for maintaining, documenting and submitting the required PR- purchase requests to re-stock supplies / new equipment and support services, as needed. 

  • Change-out lab materials and equipment according to schedule and lab experiment requests in coordination with faculty and other approved users of the engineering laboratories.

  • Update inventory of lab materials and equipment per established lab inventory control procedures from and to lab storage and within labs, as needed.

  • Maintain / update / coordinate lab schedule in alignment with lab manager / engineering faculty lecture course schedules.  Supervise and schedule the engineering work-study students required for lab instruction / support /maintenance in coordination with AUIS FMD-facilities and IT.

  • Document maintain and update MSDS- materials data safety sheets and follow established academic, scientific  and safety polices per USA- OSHA-occupational health and safety administration guidelines and the KRG MHESR- Ministry of Health Education Scientific Research.

  • Maintain and follow laboratory procedures and safety policies to properly handle any hazardous materials or chemicals before, during and after lab sessions per waste management guidelines.

  • Operate any laboratory equipment per warranty specifications and in a safe manner. Attend safety and equipment training and occasional staff meetings as required.

  • Help to establish and maintain an overall organized, clean, safe and learning-friendly laboratory environment.

Job Qualifications: 

  • Relevant academic science or engineering laboratory experience for teaching, mentoring and working with undergraduate students with hands-on cooperative learning instruction in a laboratory setting.

  • Organizational, documentation and clerical skills, along with laboratory report and technical reading and writing skills for developing and documenting engineering laboratory instructional materials.  Basic computer literacy, (i.e.) MS office, power point, word, excel, project plus and statistical analysis.

  • Competency with the use of mathematics (i.e.) handling scientific equipment, materials and chemical preparation.  Previous mechanical and chemical laboratory safety training or certification.

  • Creative and resourceful to provide alternative experiments or teaching methods using existing equipment and materials with limited or unavailable resources.

  • Willingness to learn new engineering concepts and advanced technology based educational tools and work in a non-traditional educational setting.

  • Ability to communicate and work with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students with a range of reading, writing and analytical skills.

  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
