The Department of English and Translation at the American University in Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) invites applications for the position of part-time adjunct Instructor of Arabic.
The successful candidate for the position will have:
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in formal Arabic, as his or her native language, as well as in English, the primary language of instruction at the University.
At least three years of combined experience in teaching at the postsecondary level and working in relevant industry positions. Having legal background is a plus.
Evidence of inspiring teaching skills, including the ability to teach diverse populations and students for whom neither Arabic nor English is their native language.
Master degree or other advanced degree in Arabic, Modern Languages, Arabic-English Translation, or a related field. Experience with language laboratories is highly preferred. Higher academic ranks may be considered for holders of doctoral degrees.
Beginning in September 2019, the Department of English and Translation will offer a new degree, B.A. in Translation that prepares students to perform at a professional level in a wide variety of multilingual environments. Historically focused on English language and literature, the Department is expanding its course offerings to help graduates succeed in the polyglot culture of the region. Increasingly the Department seeks to ensure that AUIS graduates demonstrate university-level language skills not only in English but in the predominant language(s) of the area where they hope to live and work. AUIS students in majors such as Law, International Studies and Business will enroll in the Department’s Arabic language courses as preparation for careers in law, government, and international companies and agencies.
Now in its twelfth year, AUIS is a private, not-for-profit liberal arts college in the scenic cultural capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The University is educating a new generation of bright, motivated young men and women dedicated to critical thinking, comfort with conflicting beliefs, and community involvement. Its 1,400 students are taught in English by faculty members from 20 countries, with more than a third of the faculty from the United States. The University’s acclaimed preparatory program is the first in Iraq to receive U.S. accreditation (CEA). AUIS graduates have continued their studies at leading universities in the United States and Europe.
