Assistant Professor, Department of Social Sciences
Dr. Flaherty teaches pre-modern history at AUIS, having previously taught International Relations theory. He studied IR as an undergraduate, and took an MPhil in Modern Chinese Studies for his master's degree.
His main area of research is in war - in particular, the philosophical definition of the concept, and the ways in which war has shaped (and continues to shape) various forms of human political and social organization. He has a specific interest in the potential sociopolitical and military consequences of the post-'peak oil' energy shortage.
