Bachelor of Science in Engineering

The Engineering Department at American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) is pioneering engineering education in Iraq and the region. Since its inception in 2013, the Department has committed itself to providing students with the highest standard of American-style education. 
 
The Engineering Department is accredited by both Ministries of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) of the federal Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government. Moreover, the Department is preparing for recognition by the American Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). 
 
The Department currently offers three Engineering majors in Civil, Mechanical, and Energy engineering, with an ambitious plan to offer an additional four new major programs, which are in high-demand across the country and the wider region. The Department also focuses on providing students with knowledge related to cutting-edge technology, coupled with innovation and forward-thinking. 
 
Graduates of the AUIS Engineering Department are equipped with a solid engineering background as well as all engineering skills that will allow them to take the lead in their profession. Realizing that Engineers need more than theoretical knowledge, the Department focuses on providing students with a multitude of skills. Leadership aptitude, innovation, ethics, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, interpersonal, tolerance, and communication skills are an integral part of the major curricula. Furthermore, students’ well-being, both physically and mentally, is a top priority for both AUIS and the Engineering Department.

The Engineering Department at American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) aspires to be the pre-eminent choice for engineering education in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the wider region. The Engineering program provides students with the highest level of education, forward-thinking, innovation, professionalism, and leadership. The Department focuses on promoting teamwork, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills through intricately and carefully designed English-language based curricula that promote these skills. The Department also focuses on research and innovation skills by integrating state-of-the-art technology in its engineering majors.

The Engineering Department aims to be the benchmark for engineering education in Iraq and the wider region. Through continuous development of its curricula and staff, the Department aims to produce world-class graduates prepared to lead a renaissance of innovation across the country.

Within just a few years of graduation, graduates from the Engineering Department are expected to attain at least one of the following program educational objectives. Due to the establishment of a new AUIS strategy, new PEOs have been adopted in September 2019. The Engineering Department strives to prepare graduates who after the first few years of graduation:

  • PEO 1 - Become highly ethical and technically competent engineers for successful and productive careers in the engineering profession;
  • PEO 2 - Engage in professional development activities, pursue graduate studies, and research and new career opportunities; and
  • PEO 3 - Demonstrate effective communication, teamwork skills, and adaptability to diverse environments with aptitude for solving engineering problems.

 

  • 1. Ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics;
  • 2. Ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors;
  • 3. Ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences;
  • 4. Ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts;
  • 5. Ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives;
  • 6. Ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions; and
