AUIS Creative Arts Competition Awards Prizes to Student Writers

American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) held a creative arts competition for students on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Students who submitted their original work for the competition performed in front of an audience of community members in the Building B Courtyard.
 
The Creative Arts Award is awarded each year to outstanding AUIS students who demonstrate exceptional creativity.
 
This year’s theme was ‘Kurdish/Iraqi Youth in the 21st Century’ and submissions were accepted in four categories: creative nonfiction essays, poetry, monologues, and short stories. Prizes included $200 for first-place and $100 for a second-place runner up.
 
The competition’s winners were Hashim Haji (first place) for his submission ‘Looking for Life, Stolen Iris’ and Helin Darwesh (runner up) for her submission ‘The Haunted House.’
 
Other student finalists for the event were Farzana Jafari, for her submission ‘The Story, After You, The Ending, Move On,’ and Jegr Taib for his submission ‘Diary of a Young Iraqi.’
