Dr. Nihad B. S. Baban received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering/Geotechnical Engineering at the Civil Engineering and Sustainability Department from the Brunel University, London in April 2013.
He has conducted researched in the areas of construction materials, engineering, and geotechnical engineering. His cutting edge research was in the areas of mechanical and geotechnical properties of gypseous soils and gypsum rocks for large-scale dam foundations. He also developed empirical equations for geotechnical property relationships of Kurdistan’s soil. He integrated the advances in areas of problematic soil and rocks, and construction material technology to modify their engineering/mechanical properties. His research of geotechnical engineering was on understanding the short-term and long-term behaviors of gypsum rock and gypseous soils causing major infrastructural damage in many parts of the UK, such as Ripon using modified traditional laboratory testing equipment.
Dr. Baban’s research has also focused on experimental and empirical studies of the performance of salty soils and rocks, mortars and concrete, and environmental impacts on the engineering properties of ground and construction materials in the UK and Kurdistan region of Iraq. Dr. Baban has developed laboratory physical models to predict the behavior of steel pipe piles embedded in fine-grained soils.
His work has resulted in many journal publications and conference proceedings. The refereed journal publications are in Geotechnical Research (ICE), and the Journal of Geotechnical and Geological Engineering. His research was also presented at the British Geological Survey (UK) in 2011, the Iraqi Conference of Engineering Sciences (UCL) in 2012, ResCon 12 (Brunel University) in 2012, and in the research students’ conference (Brunel University) in 2012.
Dr. Baban has over fifteen years of experience in teaching undergraduate civil engineering courses and over five years of experience in teaching civil engineering courses at the postgraduate level, as well as twelve years of supervision of construction engineering site work. He has six years of experience in testing (field and laboratory) of construction materials, soil and rocks for various projects in Kurdistan, southern Iraq, and projects with the Consulting Engineering Bureau at the University of Sulaimani (2003-2009). Additionally,, he has more than seventeen years of research experience in the fields of soils, rocks, and concrete, with emphasis on new materials and methods for analyzing the stabilization of soil, mortar, and concrete mechanical properties, and modification of several modern devices for testing rocks and soil.
He has contributed as a reviewer for many national and international peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
